Data-dense design

Interaction design
A collection of data-dense designs from older projects.
Pen and paper
I knew there were going to be a lot of fiddly components, so I established a baseline quickly with pen and paper.
Corporate research view
Analysts can filter down from industry to a company, then drill sideways with filters.
Finding what you need in a torrent of data
My design gives the analyst any level of chart from industry down to a single well.
Geographic view
Extracted resources are more complex than electricity and equities: they vary by where you get them from, delivery is far from instant, and transactions cannot be reversed.
Wood MacKenzie
Wood Mackenzie is a global energy and natural resources consultancy that provides data, analysis, and strategic insight across oil, gas, power, renewables, mining, and metals.
Its research and models are widely used by governments, investors, and major corporations to inform capital allocation and policy decisions.
My designs give analysts a coherent view across entire markets, and also the capability to drill down to a single well's data.
McLaren Formula 1
I brought fans closer to the world of F1 racing by creating a new suite of modules to present race data, radio communications and media inside a stream.
My concepts boosted engagement during races and sustain anticipation between events.
Paper prototyping
Everyone gathered around the wall and experimented with my drawn assets. New assets could be whipped up in seconds.
Detailed content schedule
Formula 1 follows a Thursday–Sunday rhythm. Half the design challenge was engaging audiences when the cars weren’t on track and content was scarce.
Longitudinal car data
The effects of pitting, fuel load, tyre choice and condition are all revealed by the lap time and position readouts.
Car data specification
My detailed explanations ensured that developers had confidence they were building the intended product.
Online booking flow
There are over a dozen ways you can be denied boarding, so I needed to design recovery pathways back onto the happy path.
Flight rescheduling tool
Sitting alongside our Virgin Atlantic SME with pen and paper first gave her the confidence that I had understood her problem.
Flight rescheduling lo-fi prototype
Building client confidence again, and validating my assumptions through a lo-fi prototype.
Booking page prototype
Only Axure could handle the large amount of conditionals, stored variables and show/hide events.
